FAQ
How to Use
How long will The Compost Collector® last on my kitchen counter?
That’s a great question! It depends upon how frequently food scraps are placed inside and the quantity. Also, keep in mind, The Compost Collector® is made from 100% pre-consumer paper pulp and may weaken when it becomes too moist. That said, we expect The Compost Collector® to last approximately seven (7) days for a 2-person household or a few days less for larger households.
What if I see mold or weird stuff growing on or inside The Compost Collector®?
This is quite possible and depends upon the environment. In the early stages of natural composting, food scraps will begin to break down inside The Compost Collector® and mold or discoloration may occur. No worries! The Compost Collector® itself was created to be part of this regenerative process and should last the seven (7) days before tossing.
Can I pour liquids into The Compost Collector®?
Sadly, no. We recommend solid "Anything Once Alive" scraps only like eggshells, fruit skins, meat, bones, table scraps, pet fur, and human hair. It is okay if these items are moist; that is expected. But liquid items like gravy, sauces, and soups should be avoided. This is because The Compost Collector® is made from 100% pre-consumer recycled paper pulp, which will absorb liquids quickly and weaken its strength.
Can I use The Compost Collector® with another counter top composting container?
TCC® is designed as a standalone container, and we do not recommend using it with another counter top container. If you do use TCC® as a liner inside a stainless steel or plastic container, follow these suggestions:
- Allow TCC® to hang from the top of the vessel so that the paper pulp sides do not completely touch the plastic or metal container.
- Use the lift tabs to pull TCC® out of the container. When TCC® is moist, these tabs may cause tearing at the moisture line. Allow TCC® to dry, then gently pull the lift tabs upward to pull TCC® out of the container.
- Due to the immediate composting process initiated from the moment scraps enter the bin, the regenerative process creates an environment where condensation will occur; without airflow, TCC® will remain moist. Remove TCC® from the secondary container a day before disposal to allow it to dry out for easy transport.
FAQ
Materials & Sustainability
What is The Compost Collector® made of?
100% pre-consumer recycled paper pulp. Our molded pulp manufacturing process utilizes paper scraps from pre-consumer recycled paper products and cardboard boxes and forms them into a new container, The Compost Collector®.
Why did we choose 100% pre-consumer paper pulp?
It is widely available, can be formed into any shape with no seams, and composts quickly. It’s also one of the most recycled and sustainable materials currently available. Alternatives such as paper boxes have corners and seams that are more likely to cause leakage on the counter.
Where are your products produced?
We are currently producing The Compost Collector™ at a factory in Mexicali, Mexico. As the business grows, we will need to source additional factory capacity and intend to continue sourcing in North America.
Is The Compost Collector® a single-use product?
While it's designed for easy disposal, The Compost Collector® is not single-use because it can be used over and over again for about 7 days, depending on what you put inside. It's also made of 100% pre-consumer paper pulp, a key "brown" ingredient for healthy composting. Brown ingredients are carbon-rich materials like dead leaves, mulch, wood chips, peanut shells, shredded cardboard, dried pine needles, etc. These are your dense, slow-burning fuels compost needs to maintain a harmonious balance of carbon, nitrogen (greens and other food waste), oxygen, and water. We chose paper pulp for this exact purpose, to help make your at-home compost or municipality's compost even healthier.
